I’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately (maybe for a while, actually), and this is what I’ve been trying to tell myself: just make small decisions. If all I do in a day is make one small decision, that’s fine, it’s enough. I get overwhelmed regularly in my writing. I have lots of projects and ideas, and only so much time, sometimes no time, each day. The ideas and projects start to feel like a zany hive of contentious bees that I have to carry with me everywhere. There are three novels in that hive, several short stories, essays, song lyrics, poems, unsent letters to friends and lovers. The hive seems like a big problem if I look at it all, all at once—how am I possibly going to finish three novels, etc., right now? Small decisions.
